flashsperiments 1: Averaging Randomness

So I got sidetracked again. I wondered to myself: What happens if you take a screen full of randomly coloured pixels and start averaging them? Can you make random data resolve into nice-looking shapes?

Yes.

But it’s not quite as simple as you’d think.

bb: Update 8

Hello! The procrastination mentioned in the last update is now complete; the UI is now slightly better at giving you the faintest idea of what’s going on.

This means that I’m now on to netcode, so expect another disappearance while I spend copious amounts of time crying. I’ve just realised that I moved to a new version of SFML so I bet I’m going to have to spend days porting it too. Bugger.

Here’s your damn picture.

As always, the latest build can be found here.

And yes, I know there haven’t been any sounds for a while. I should really make a bwooooow noise for the one with the tongue, but I’m not going to. SO THERE.

bb: Update 7

LOOK WHAT I FOUND! A new post!

bb returns, as intermittently as ever. Lots of behind the scenes work for a system that probably won’t be worth it. I have a little more procrastination to do and then the dreaded networking will be soon to follow. Fingers crossed Terra Firma’s NetLib will come in handy…

bb: Update 6

Ugh, three weeks since last update. Sorry about that. And all I have to show for it is some mouse input handling which I knocked up in a rush today.

bb: Update 5

I add some numbers, and suddenly it’s more of a game. They fade and everything!

bb: Update 4

I was about a minute away from posting this last weekend, but I then found a horrible bug and shut down my computer in disgust. Since then I’ve been doing silly things like having a social life, but I did get a chance to run it past my good buddy Ben Millwood (he is a super clever guy) to see if it compiled and ran on Linux. A couple of tiny changes later and it did. Thanks, Ben! Then.

As for the bug, it turns out that if you add zero to a number, and then divide it by something else, you can sometimes get a different result than if you hadn’t added the zero. Hooray for floating-point! Anyway, it’s fixed now, hence this post.

As always, the latest build can be found here.

Random Bollocks: “I don’t like video games”

No, of course I like video games. This post is about people who say that, and whether it’s a dumb thing or not.

The context is a G+ comment:

I get well annoyed at people that say they don’t like video games. For me that makes as much sense as saying that you don’t like movies or literature. I mean I can understand someone saying that they don’t like a specific game but dismissing an entire category of whatever just sounds stupid to me.

The person then followed up:

Maybe I should have used something else as an example. Someone saying that they don’t like color or food etc. To me that makes as much sense as saying that you don’t like video games. My point is that saying that you don’t like video games doesn’t mean anything. The person saying it usually means that he doesn’t like fps games or puzzle games or whatever specific type of game that they don’t enjoy. Hence it annoys me and I think it’s stupid ;)

I disagreed. Specifically, I said I think it’s perfectly valid to dismiss the entire medium of video games.

Wait, what?

bb: Update 3

bb is now even more interactive! You can see the beginnings of a game forming, if you squint and look sideways at it. Also, the crash in the previous version has been fixed.

bb: Update 2

I did a little more work on bb. It is now very slightly interactive, but not interestingly so.
